Regardless of your position in the debate over global warming, being good stewards of the environment should be something everyone is concerned about. There are simple as well as free things each of us who use computers can do, to be less of a burden on the environment. For example simply powering off your computer and other equipment when you're not using it. How easy is that? Using the power management features of your equipment effectively, allowing them to go into a sleep state when not being used is another simple thing we could do. Not only will these simple tips save on the environment, but they will also save on your pocketbook. These days everyone wants to put something back in their pocket, I know I do.
Another thing we can do to help the environment is to donate or give away the equipment you know longer use. If equipment is non-functional there are local businesses that specialize in recycling used devices such as computers and cell phones. When you purchase new equipment consider purchasing technology that is friendly to the environment. For example Apple currently offers laptop computers made of recycled and Earth friendly components.
Perhaps my favorite Green Computing tip is virtualization. Using technology such as Microsoft Hyper-V available on Windows Server 2008 products, you can configure one powerful server to host and run other servers as virtual guests. What does that mean? It means for example that instead of having 3 physical servers running to meet demand, you can have one powerful physical server that hosts the servers virtually. The servers each run and are available as before, just contained within 1 machine instead of 3. You save money, buying 1 server instead of 3. You save electricity, powering 1 server instead of 3. You save on the cost of cooling multiple computers and you save the space they would have used.
